Leeds are in ‘crisis mode’ – and Brian McDermott’s untimely exit is the latest blow for the Rhinos.
Sacking the club’s most successful coach at such a pivotal point in the Super League season may seem crazy to come. However, few Rhinos fans will be surprised at this morning’s news.
Slipping to their seventh straight top-flight loss when being hammered by Wigan Warriors 46-8 on Thursday evening, the writing was on the wall for McDermott.
Their last win was a 20-18 success over Hull KR at the end of April. Simply put, that is just not good enough for a club with aims of defending their crown.
Have Leeds Rhinos made the right decision to sack Brian McDermott?
500+ VOTES SO FAR
Leeds sit in eighth, just above Huddersfield Giants on points difference and are in grave danger of being dragged into the Qualifiers for the second time in three years.
It’s a far cry from their treble success of 2015, as well as their Grand Final exploits last year.
McDermott has overseen the huge highs and bitter lows at Headingley and perhaps it was the right time to depart.
Now, as with any prospective new coach arriving, it wouldn’t surprise me if Leeds were to produce a sharp upturn in performance.
They have four games to save their skins in terms of the Super 8s but the new manager coming in must bring consistency back to one of rugby league’s biggest clubs.
