Why this fascinating letter which is all about Hull is worth £8,000

A letter written by Henry VIII is about to go on sale for over £8,000 – and it’s all about Hull.

Christie’s Auction House is holding a valuable books and manuscripts sale on December 12, which includes a wide range of material from medieval manuscripts and autograph letters to early printing and geopolitics.

One of the stand-out lots of the upcoming auction is a letter written by King Henry VIII, appointing a master gunner to the garrison in Hull.

The letter is believed to have been written in 1541 and has been given an estimate of £8,000 to £12,000.

A spokesman for Christie’s said: “The item in question is a letter written by Henry VIII circa 1541 appointing a ‘master gunner’ to the garrison at Hull, with an estimate of £8,000 – 12,000.

“Henry had visited Hull in August and September 1541, and made extensive orders for its fortification and garrisoning over the following months, perhaps in preparation for his attack on Scotland later in 1542.

“It would be a great opportunity for a Hull bidder to acquire a piece of local and national history.”

Other lots in the auction include Scottish economist and moral philosopher Adam Smith’s own copy of the Wealth of Nations, with an estimate of £500,000 to £800,000, which will be sold alongside its immediate counterpoint – an inscribed copy of Karl Marx’s most important work on economics, Das Kapital, estimated at £150,000 to £250,000.

A further highlight is a series of documents relating to early Scottish history, and especially the extraordinary life and reign of Mary Queen of Scots. These include three documents signed by Mary and one by her cousin and arch-enemy, Elizabeth I of England.

The auction will be taking place from 10.30am at Christie’s in King Street, St James’s, London. Online bidding is available by clicking here.
