What did Hull FC star Sika Manu do to land ban?

A lot of Hull FC fans have reacted in shock to Sika Manu’s three-match suspension and there is no wonder why.

There were no big incidents in the game associated with Manu and no stoppages in play with players coming together over what happened, but the Black and Whites will not be appealing the decision and here’s why.

Manu accidentally applied unnecessary pressure to the neck of Owen Buckley whilst tackling the Widnes’ winger in the 58th minute of the win over the Vikings on Friday night.

The incident wasn’t penalised at the time and Buckley didn’t make too much of it apart from rubbing his neck before and after playing the ball before remaining on the field.

It’s unclear exactly how it was subsequently picked upon by the Rugby Football League disciplinary panel but after looking over it, they chose to act on what was essentially deemed a crusher tackle.

An RFL statement on the incident read: “Defending player, in or after effecting a tackle, uses any part of his body forcefully to bend or apply unnecessary pressure to the head and/or neck and/or spinal column of the tackled player so as to keep the tackled player at a disadvantage in or after the tackle.”

The Black and Whites chose not to challenge the charge after reviewing the video themselves and Manu will now miss games against Huddersfield Giants, St Helens and Wakefield Trinity.
