Shaun Lunt’s rallying cry to Hull KR as captain calls for final push

Shaun Lunt says it’s vital Hull KR break their three-year duck and string back-to-back victories together.

The Robins host Salford Red Devils on Sunday in a crucial Super League affair and will hope to back up their 37-10 win over Huddersfield Giants.

Not since June 2015 have Rovers been able to claim successive Super League victories, a feat which they now must clinch once more if their top-eight dreams are to be kept alive.

KR captain Lunt, who returned to the KR line-up a fortnight ago after three months out with a knee injury, believes the comebacks of key individuals such as Danny McGuire can play pivotal roles in overcoming Salford at KCOM Craven Park this weekend.

With just four matches remaining, the 31-year-old is calling for Rovers to go on their own ‘Grand Final’ journey.

“We need them back-to-back wins, they’re crucial if we’re to stand any chance of staying in the mix for the top-eight,” Lunt told the Mail.

“Every game we need to win, it’s like a Grand Final week in week out. We’re looking forward to Salford coming here after a big turnaround from the win over Huddersfield. The win was the most pleasing thing, whether it’s by one or 20.

“We needed that against Huddersfield. We’ve not had back to back points this year, we’ve always backed it up with a loss.

“We had that break a couple of weeks ago, and it came at the right time. There was a lot of stress in the camp to be honest. We all had a chance to let our hair down a bit and then get back on the horse. What Tim said, to start again, is exactly right.”

Hailing the return of the influential McGuire, Lunt insists nothing will faze the 35-year-old despite being involved in a fight for survival.

“To have Maggsy back in the side is huge,” added Lunt, who played alongside McGuire during their Leeds Rhinos days.

“He’s one of the best stand-offs in the modern era. It’s massive not just for me to play alongside him but for the boys too. To have him in your team week in week out will do us well.

“He’s just a true champion, a winner. Nothing fazes Maggsy so to have him playing for us as opposed to against us is great.”

Coach Tim Sheens is now able to call upon a significant number of his squad members, with only Justin Carney (hand) and George Lawler (leg) left in the treatment room.

As such, reliable back-rower James Donaldson was left out of the team that beat Huddersfield and though tough calls now have to be made by the Robins boss, Lunt insists that will only prove beneficial for the team.

“We could have done with all of us back fit a few weeks ago but we’re all going to be needed at the back end of the season,” said the KR skipper.

“When you’re leaving out players of the quality like that it shows that you have a good team, with good depth. Donno has been our most consistent performers, never mind this year. It’s good, leaving players out, it means you have a good 17 week in, week out.”
