A new film by the man who was the creative director behind 2017’s spectacular opening show is being screened in Hull later this month.
Documentary film maker Sean McAllister’s A Northern Soul examines Hull’s year in the spotlight as the UK City of Culture and, in particular, warehouse worker Steve Arnott’s Beats Bus project.
The film follows Steve as he turns his idea of touring a musical bus around Hull’s estates into reality.
The team behind the project are currently trying to raise £5,000 through a Go Funding page to keep the mobile studio delivering hip-hop and graffiti art workshops for youngsters on the road.
The 76-minute film also features the director’s own parents as they sample some of the events during 2017, including his own Made in Hull sound and light extravaganza in Queen Victoria Square.
Announcing the screenings on Twitter, he said: “It’s official! Can’t wait to finally bring A Northern Soul back home to Hull.”
The film earned a series of rave reviews after being premiered at the annual Sheffield Documentary Film Festival last month.
The Guardian’s Charlie Philips wrote: “A Northern Soul functions brilliantly on both a political and emotional level.
“At no point is anyone patronised or pitied, and much of British TV and film could learn a lot from how McAllister makes films about poverty and working-class charcaters.”
Now dates for screenings in Hull have been confirmed as part of a partnership between Hull Independent Cinema and two cinema venues in the city.
The film will be shown at Middleton Hall on the University of Hull’s Cottingham Road campus from Thursday, July 19, to Sunday, July 22.
It will then move to Vue in St. Stephen’s shopping centre where it will be screened from Monday, July 23, to Thursday, July 26.
All screenings will start at 7.30pm and some will also feature question and answer sessions with Sean McAllister and Steve Arnott with performances by the Beats Bus kids at some selected screenings.
Tickets can be booked via Hull Box Office at www.hullboxoffice.com or by calling 01482 221113.
