Scunthorpe play hardball over Hull City’s pursuit of defender Conor Townsend

Scunthorpe United have told Hull City they will have to significantly raise their valuation if they are to succeed in luring academy graduate Conor Townsend back to the KCOM Stadium.

Townsend has emerged as a summer transfer target for the Tigers after head coach Nigel Adkins identified the left-back as having the potential to challenge Stephen Kingsley in City’s plans for 2018-19.

The Mail understands there has been contact between City and Scunthorpe in the last 48 hours but any hopes of tying up a deal quickly appear to be slim.

Although the Tigers are prepared to pay in the region of £250,000 for Townsend, a player they allowed to leave on a free transfer in January 2016, the Iron have made it clear they would not be willing to sell at that price.

Whether City pursue the deal remains to be seen in a financially straitened summer but Scunthorpe are reluctant to lose Townsend after triggering a 12-month extension in May.

Eleven days after making Eric Lichaj the first new arrival of City’s summer, Adkins continues to wait on further business to be completed at the KCOM Stadium.

A contract offer tabled for free agent Nedum Onuoha is yet to be signed as the former QPR skipper weighs up his options, while a move for Motherwell’s Cedric Kipre has also so far come to nothing.

City are understood to have bid £250,000 for Kipre last week only for the SPL side to demand £1m for the central defender. The Tigers would not be prepared to go as high as that figure but would still be open to a deal if a middle ground could be found.

Adkins leads his squad off to a warm-weather training camp in Portugal on Sunday with a host of the club’s academy players set to get their chance in friendlies against Maritimo and Braga.
