An iconic Hull pub which is set to be stripped bare could be brought back to life, according to its determined landlord.
Simon Woolston, who owns the pub and funeral parlour Heavenly Services, revealed he wants to bring the pub “into the 21st century” as part of an extensive refurbishment plan and the banner outside the bar has already been removed.
Speaking on Friday, he said: “Obviously it was a gay friendly pub when I took over I’ve had other managers that have managed the pub since I took over four or five years ago and ultimately we’ve had less clientele because you get less and less people going to pubs like this.
“Bobby Mandrell will still be on every Saturday and anyone who wants to hire it for a private function can do.
“But now it is going to be used specifically for wakes. We give a free wake in the price of £1,700 for the funerals and that includes free food and use of the venue.”
As part of the refurb, all the various and somewhat random paraphernalia that covers the walls of the Tavern will be given away so people can keep a slice of the popular pub.
However, in more exciting news, Mr Woolston said the Tavern may still be reopened and recreated in another venue in another part of the city.
Mr Woolston said: “A lot of it is going to be given away to people who have been in there and all the photos and everything else will be put into boxes.
“But we don’t know what we are going to do with all of them and we may still yet open up another venue as the Vauxhall Tavern.
“There really isn’t another place like the Tavern, especially when it comes to gay venues and you get all manner of people in there, whether it’s gay, bisexual, heterosexual – it’s a place which becomes a meeting hub.”

Do you think the Vauxhall Tavern will work as a venue for wakes?
