Drivers faced long queues on the A63 heading towards Hull after “live wires” were left laid out in puddles across the main road into the city.
A single-vehicle crash on Wednesday morning brought a lamppost down in the middle of the carriageway, leaving the cables wet and exposed in the wet weather.
No-one was injured in the accident, which involved a red car which crashed into the post on the eastbound carriageway, just beyond the North Ferriby sliproad.
One lane of the road remains closed by Humberside Police as teams work to lift the wreckage from the road. Driers have been told to expect delays throughout the afternoon while emergency services clear the road.
The car was recovered from the embankment where it came to rest after the smash, which happened during a downpour.
One witness at the scene told Hull Live that it seemed as though the car span out of control before hitting the lamppost. Posting on the Hull Traffic and Travel group on Facebook, the woman said: “Looks like a car has spun out and hit the lamppost at the side of A63.
In a statement, a spokesman for Humberside Police said: “Officers are in attendance on the A63 near South Cave after a lamp post was knocked down in a road traffic accident.
“A car collided with the lamp post just after 10.30am this morning. No-one was hurt but the post is currently blocking one lane and electricity cables are exposed.
“There will be traffic delays in the area while it is made safe and the carriageway is cleared.”
