Lee Radford hails Hull FC’s retention of top-line talent and talks Huddersfield Giants

Lee Radford has hailed Hull FC’s ability to retain all of their top-line talent for next year after Sika Manu became the latest to come to terms.

The Black and Whites have re-signed six of their most influential players to new contracts this year and will lose none of their key players at the end of the current campaign.

Albert Kelly and Carlos Tuimavave have been tied down until the end of 2020, Jake Connor until the end of 2021, while Fetuli Talanoa, Minichiello and now Manu have agreed deals for 2019.

It’s a clear sign of continuity and Radford, who last week insisted there would be ‘zero additional recruitment’ for 2019, has explained why retention is so important.

“People enjoy coming to training and working here and from day one that was the environment we wanted to create,” Radford told the Mail. “We have had some success with that and I think we will have some more success as well.

“You only want to replace if they are not doing their job or they want to go home. They are clearly doing their job and they don’t want to go home.”

Lewis Bienek is also on FC’s books in what is essentially an addition for the 2019 season, while Joe Westerman may still yet be offered an extension into next year, with Radford confident in what his side can produce when they are all available.

“We just need to get some continuity with regards to our team on the field,” Radford continued. “I have no doubt where will be striving towards when we get that.”

Meanwhile, attentions turn to Huddersfield Giants this evening as Hull look to close the gap on the play-off spots.

The Black and Whites can move to within one point of fourth-placed Castleford Tigers with a win on the road, but Radford insists only FC’s best will do.

“Huddersfield were horrible against Hull KR but I’m sure they will respond for us. They have Ukuma Ta’ai coming back and Broughy as well. They are both significant players for them,” Radford added.

“We are expecting a real response. It’s on national TV so I’d anticipate that. We are going to have to be really good to get a result.”
