A shopper has spoken of his “shock” when he found a “large beetle” in a bag of lettuce while shopping at the city centre’s biggest supermarket.
The man was shopping for veg and salad for his tea in Tesco, in St Stephen’s Shopping Centre, when he made the gruesome discovery.
The dead insect, that was around “half an inch long”, was at the bottom of a packet of little gem lettuce, surrounded by green salad leaves.
The product, which is described as “handpicked delicious whole leaves”, was on his shopping list before he spotted the creature lurking in the salad bag.
He said he was relieved to have seen the beetle before he had taken it back home, and said: “I was just doing my weekly shop at the Tesco store in St Stephen’s and was getting some veg for a salad.
“I was shocked to pick up a packet of little gem lettuce and found this beetle inside.
“It was a large beetle, probably half an inch long with long, jagged hind legs.
“Luckily, it was visible from the packet and I noticed it before buying it and getting it home.
“It would have been a much bigger shock had I discovered the beetle when opening it and it would certainly have put me off my salad.”
The man says he informed a member of staff about the beetle that had manifested itself among the green leaves of the Tesco product.
