Danny Houghton on why Hull FC need to be top four before Super League split

Hull FC captain Danny Houghton says its imperative the club win their remaining four games of the regular season to get in the top four before the Super 8s begin.

Currently fifth in the Super League table, three points off fourth-placed Castleford Tigers, Hull have work to do in the next month to catch the leading pack.

While the Black and Whites will confirm their place in the top eight with a victory at Huddersfield Giants this evening, it’s the top four and ultimately a play-off semi-final berth which FC and Houghton are pursuing.

Aware that a top four place at the league split brings with it an extra home game, the hooker is eager to see Hull overhaul either Castleford or Warrington Wolves in the league run-in, with winning their remaining four regular season games key to that goal.

“It’s a must-win game for them tonight, but I think it’s the same for us if we want to get into the top four before the league breaks. It’s must-win for us to get in the four in the next month,” Houghton told the Mail.

“You always believe you can make the top four, but we want to be in the top four or as close as possible to it before the break.

“If we can get in the top four in the next month it helps your bid to get in the semi-finals because you get that extra home game in the Super 8s and we’ve been very good at home this season, so we want that extra game at home.”

Following their trip to the Giants, FC host St Helens, travel to Wakefield Trinity and then end the regular season at home to Hull KR. With tough games to come and little between the teams at the top, Houghton is aware of the need to build a winning run.

“The teams in and around the four are tightly bunched together, which maybe hasn’t been the case in recent seasons,” he added.

“There are six or seven teams still in with a chance of the top four, so you’ve got to keep winning.”
