One only entered for a laugh and the other borrowed her friend’s dress.
But Sam Sharp and Liz Hallett are celebrating after being chosen as the best dressed man and woman at this year’s Beverley Ladies Day.
In a competition co-judged by Love Island star Chris Hughes, the stylish pair won some top notch prizes and both were shocked to bag first place.
Sam, 22, a mechanic who is going into the prison service in November, bought his suit from Verb Fashion in Beverley and was entered by his mates for “a laugh.”
“I never thought I’d win. We’re here in a box supporting our friend Ashley Godber who died on the way to a cricket match last year,” he said.
“We are here to support his foundation and to support his kids.
“My suit was bought last week from Verb in Flemingate. It cost £380.
“I’ve known the owner for years and I want to help support local businesses.”
Liz was in direct competition with her husband who was a finalist in the men’s category.
But out of the pair she was the one who came up trumps – and she owes a lot of her success to her friend.
The speechless winner wore a dress given to her by her friend who bought the garment from InWear, with Liz buying all of the accessories from independent traders in Beverley.
The retired district nurse from Tickton said: “It’s lovely to win and I’m thrilled to bits and very proud to be the lady that won in Beverley.
“Ladies Day is a great day to get dressed up.
“I’m glad I’ve pipped my husband to the post in winning – I think it’s so funny.”
Liz walked away with a trip to Iceland a £200 voucher for Outfit, whereas Sam bagged himself a swanky £500 watch.
